It's all about Stripes

I LOVE stripes, and right now I'm so into black and white stripes! So I decided to take my boring TV wall and jazz it up with wide stripes.

I pondered how I was going to accomplish this task for many weeks. I thought about just painting the stripes, but then worried about not having perfect lines (it would drive me crazy if they weren't perfectly straight and crisp lines), I thought about using wood for both the white and black stripes...but I finally settled on a way to get it done.

Step 1: Tape off the sides of the wall

Step 2: Paint over the edge of the tape with the existing color on your wall. Our walls are Sherman Williams Shingle Grey, so I painted the inside edge of the tape with the Shingle Grey paint. Doing this step will allow the grey to fill in the air bubbles and gaps under the tape line.

Step 3: Once the grey paint has completely dried, you can start painting your wall. I went with a true white Sherman Williams paint. And with the grey being a darker color it took several coats of the white paint to really cover the wall completely.

Step 4: Once the final coat of white paint is on start pulling off your tape, and admire your perfectly straight, crisp lines!

Step 5: Next came the wood stripes. We had to make lots of measurements and cuts, but once all of the wood was planned out I got to painting the planks. For the wood we used a 1/4" underlayment. It's thin, light and pretty inexpensive, about $10 for a 4' x 8' sheet. We did have them cut our boards into 9" stripes for us, which made for a lot less cutting when we got home.

We did have to cut around out outlets in the middle of the wall, and the white plates don't look the best, but once we get out TV hung on the wall you won't even know they are there!

After painting the rest of the boards and nailing them in...we were done!

I love how it turned out!!!

Enjoy!
